Before I start, a video to present:
Rape Club – Japan
(I cannot present the video here as the video cannot be embedded)
Waseda University. One of the top universities in Japan, and maybe perhaps the world.
So how did such a prestigious school have such a horrifying club? Or better to be termed as, syndicate? How did it manage to ‘survive and grow’, despite the many controversies surrounding it?
In my interpretation of this case, I view all members of this ‘club’, masterminds and potential victims alike, as one single group.
Firstly, group socialisation.
A situation where the individuals and the group seek to influence each other to best meet their needs.
Let’s bring to mind the mastermind first, Wada Shinichirou and his fellow founders of ‘Super Free’. They have much in common; they are the elites, being Waseda students, and they have uncontrollable desires for lust and money. And so they came together, devising a plan for a club where they can satisfy these desires of theirs.
Now, the potential victims, namely the ladies. Plus a few guys, who are there for the money and, well…sex, as well. Focusing on only the women, as the video as pointed out, the main attraction of such a club was that they could know elites from a much higher school, thus a chance of meeting their prospective SUCCESSFUL partners in life.
And so, they formed a sort of inter-reliance with one another, and this led to the start of the expansion of the club.
Then the evaluation process comes in.
Disregarding the victims (sadly) in this case, the members continued to stay on in such a club because of the benefits. Like in the video, other than the rave parties they hold all the time, profits from the membership of the club were also distributed to the members. Taken from Mainichi Shimbun, Japan, July 1, 2003:
“High-ranking members reportedly received a bigger share of profits from the ticket sales“,
it was clear that the duration of the membership was recognised as some sort of allegiance to the club, thus illustrating the fact that full membership had to be grown.
And now giving the benefit of doubt to the other male members of the club, some might not have agreed to the idea of rape, but they may have been too tempted by the presence of monetary gains to risk rejection by the other members, and especially the founders, and so they had to ‘acquire idiosyncrasy credit’ by accepting the ‘norm’.
Then comes groupthink, which I believe is the glaring similarity between all cults.
On groupthink: “a mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when members’ strivings for unanimity override their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action”
-Irving James
This ‘Super Free’, as mentioned in the video above, functioned close enough like a cult. Groupthink is rather prominent in ‘Super Free’, though it’s more for the male members of the group. They, especially Wada, believed they were untouchable. As taken from an article by Ryann Connell, staff writer for Mainichi Shimbun:
“twisted Liberal Democratic Party stalwart Seiichi Ota publicly defended the accused rapists, calling them “close to normal” and saying that rape was a sign of virility“.
Wada and the rest clearly had some sort of support from a much higher authority, thus their belief in the club’s invincibility. And with this belief, they were free to follow their set of rules and morals, or in this case, immorals. The male members start to expect a new victim after every rave party or gathering. These acts are, in no doubt, vile, but these lustful young men totally disregard such a notion and continued in what they had grown to believe as ‘normal’.
Collective rationalisation at work here?
Well, I believe many would be ‘pissed’ at the existence of such a club. (Boys with weird thinking, please do not comment~)
This may not appease everyone, but the reason I wrote in past tense for this case is because Super Free had been disbanded, after Wada and around 13 others were arrested and jailed.
Now, would you still sway unconditionally towards any ideas, as long as ‘elites’ are involved?
(Hope my grammar…can be understood.)

(First? o.O)
Wow, its really shocking to hear that such a prestigious university has such a club that gang rapes women. And the worse thing is that Japan has such little regard of women’s rights. Tsktsktsk.
Its really scary how the club (or should I say cult?) employs such efficient methods to carry out their crimes. And each step of the way is carefully planned and executed. For example, when they are recruiting members and luring the women to attend the rave parties, they bait them with monetary gain and associations with influential people. And after committing the crimes, they threatened the victims with pictures of themselves to prvent them from going to the police.
I’d rather they use their organisational skills in better ways than planning crimes. These people should stop and think what they are actually doing, instead of blindly following the others just because of temporary benefits.
Good post anyway, it really opened up my eyes to such atrocities. And I understood your post perfectly, in case you must know. 😀

Boo~
Why the ‘First’ comment~?
Generally frowned upon one, ya know? But I dun have my eyebrows with me now, so…
…eh wait, they’re there!! OK, here goes: >=(
Anyway, I agree on your idea that they should have used their ‘talents’ for something better, but then again, MLM is the only thing that comes to my mind. 😛
(Hey~ suggestion for topic to write about on your blog~?)
But then again, part of the fault lies with the potential victims as well IMO. Afterall, it is also due to their ‘obsession’ over elites that…well, led them to the lion’s den, right…?

The origins for the cause of this cults can be traced back to the japanese social norms, the roles of women are constantly view as sex object. In fact, i heard from someone that 8 out of 10 high school girls are engaged in the japanese porn industry, selling nude pictures for extra allowance.
It’s common to see women especially young girls being groped by men on the street , it had became a nature for japanese women to be submissive to this so called virility.
(seriously…there’s such wonderful invention called pepper spray…mmm i should moved to japan and sell those.)
With media like hentai, av, dramas and comic books constantly bombarding rape scene into the pop culture, rape is no longer considered as crime but fantasy to guys and hmm…girls to some extent. It’s no wonder that such “immoral” act is perceived be seen as normal despite the emotional damages it caused.
While organisations like unifem are stepping up in raising awareness on violence against women. Educating women from the third world countries of their rights and gender equality. The issue with japanese women’s role is not really addressed because it’s been accepted. hmm..blah blah blah…. ok i’ll stop typing… need to study !

You have a Super Free road trip in mind, my friend? LOL
Just a normal sightseeing trip for me will do! 😀
Btw, according to another of my Malay friend, he said that the girls over at Japan dig dark-skinned people.
He was apparently swarmed by the girls there when he was on an exchange program.
*thumbsup* 😉

*AKIRA SHOCKED*
Omg…I’m really shocked to see that…I didn’t know there was a rape club in Waseda University…OMG! Although I know that these kind of cases are kinda common in Japan but planning rapes?? From elite universities too? *faints*
I think this is really a good example of groupthink. They have the symptoms of it and it’s being shown clearly.
But i guess groupthink is mostly prominent in cults / clubs like the rape club you’ve talked about.
But of course i think that groupthink exists in normal groups too just that maybe it’s not as serious as this.
Omg…still find this rape club thing so shocking…@.@

interesting general knowledge.
once again cultural definitions are brought into play here. as with the japanese, this should not be anything surprising. it simply accentuates the image and fact that women in japan are still the weaker sex. they are like victims of their own history to me.
i mean this is still an outside opinion and it may be inaccurate or maybe those kind of acts are viewed as socially acceptable or even a sign of power and social status so until we truly experience their culture and what has been ingrained, we probably will not understand the root of it.

I agree.
It’s quite sad actually…but what to do?
We ‘aliens’ have no say in any way. 😦

In Japan, women are considered worthless and the men are the boss!
I think its not a surprise for a rape club to exist. Perhaps its a norm for people in Japan. Maybe for the women in Japan, being raped is a honor for them!.
Moral standards often can only be judged by people of the particular society. Rape to them may not be morally wrong. Maybe the rape club is a hidden thing within the university and not recognized by the school.
farhan why not! lols Japan is a nice place!

“Maybe for the women in Japan, being raped is a honor for them!”
Wah…this comment…gonna get yourself the wrath of countless Japanese women leh~ 😛
And yes, the ‘rape club’ was actually under the guise of a social networking group.
But regardless whether rape is thought of as nothing serious to them, on the whole, it should not, and is not to, be accepted as a norm. Afterall, outrage of modesty is something no one, even for the guys, will like or enjoy, right? 🙂

This is so sick….
O my good God…
I think this what you called moral-degeneration, isn’t it? And yes, I agree that these sick people are too confounded by their own belief that they can’t see good reasons anymore. Such is the power of group think. Scary…

Imagine if something similar’s to happen in Singapore? Haha that’s will really be interesting… Anyway, fantasies aside =D, ask youself what’s the shock factor here? The fact it’s happening in a developed First World country? The fact that it’s an organised crime? The fact that it’s being planned by students of a prestigous university? Now lets move on to some facts… There’s half a million rape cases in South Africa every year, do you think that something similar is happening over there in South Africa? Why is it that the response is so muted? Appalling isn’t it? =)
